Sipiso-Piso fall, North Sumatra
Sipiso-piso Waterfall (also known as Air Terjun Sipiso-piso) is one of the most beautiful sight you will lay your eyes upon on the northern part of Lake Toba.
This tourist attraction seen in North Sumatra is very popular among visitors who come here to take a picture of the grand three hundred and sixty feet waterfall.
The Sipisopiso is a plunge waterfall in the Batak highlands of Sumatra. It is formed by a small underground river of the Karo plateau that hurls itself from a cave in the side of the lake Toba caldera some 120 meters (360 feet) down to lake level. Sipisopiso is a well-known tourist attraction and a nearby vantage point offers great vistas of the fall and the lake.
Sipiso-piso waterfall is located at Tongging Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra Province. It takes around 45 minutes to get there from Medan, the capital city of the province. The waterfall is located 800 meters above sea surface.
People say that the name of the waterfall managed by Karo regional administration has a special meaning.
In the local language, Sipiso-piso derives from a word "Piso", meaning knife. Sipiso-piso means like knives. The local people call it Sipiso-piso, because the waterfall flowing down to the water surface is relatively fast. It is so fast that each water flash is so sharp like a knife when it touches our skin. To proof it, let’s go to Sipiso-piso waterfall.
The entrance gate to Sipiso-piso is Tongging Village. It takes around 2 hour drive by a bus or provate car from Medan City. However, as soon as you get at Tongging Village, you have to continue your trip by using a public vehicle for a round 45 minutes. When you get to Sipiso-piso waterfall, you can continue your trip on foot by passing through a pathway. You have to walk along Tongging hills to the location. Some people say your weary will disappear as soon as you see the beauty of Sipiso-piso waterfall from the top of the hill. The sound of the splash water becomes the typical characteristic of the waterfall. The beauty becomes clearer when you get closer to the waterfall.
